A trip to Chernobyl
The new type of tourism that seems to have appeared in the last years is known as “dark tourism”. It explores places where people once died or where horrible events took place. Even though it seems like a sadistic idea, it can educate and show the true face of reality. Chernobyl, Ukraine, is the place where in 1986 a well known tragedy happened. A nuclear reactor exploded and a very large amount of radiations spread all over the continent.
Taking a trip to Pripyat, the ghost city of Chernobyl will give you a pretty good idea about what happened that day. It is not extremely safe because radiation “hot spots” are still scattered throughout the zone, thus tourists are advised not to break off from the group and stay with their guide.
Pripyat was a 50,000 people town from the nearby nuclear plant. 36 hours after the blast of the reactor, all the inhabitants were evacuated and were told they would be gone just for a couple of days, but no one returned. Today, it is a ghost city said to be free of all the noise and agitation. Apartments, schools and many other buildings are the same, only older and empty. You will feel like on a set of a Hollywood post-apocalypse movie. What will strike you the most will be the image of the Ferris wheel which was never put into action. The funfair was supposed to open only a few days after the disaster. Now, it is only a symbol of the catastrophe.
There is, of course, no possibility of entering into the exploded reactor, as the radiation levels in there are still high. For safety, an observation point facing the sarcophagus was placed at about 200m away, so the radiation level would not affect the tourists. Lynxes, nesting swans and great eagle owls have retaken their territory after people left. However, the level of radiation affected them and their evolution is not as fast as it should be. Those who visit the plant’s cooling pond are allowed to feed the massive catfish that appeared there.
The villages surrounding Pripyat are more fascinating and dramatic. They were kept in a better condition and can reflect the Soviet rural life. Even though it was illegal to return, a handful of elderly people live in Krasnoe and fill St. Michael’s Church every Sunday. As a warning you should know that in this area the dust and moss have a higher level of radiation than the rest, so be careful. Although dark tourism is not seen very well at the moment, it gives a chance to show what really happened during wars and other unfortunate events. It is a good way to make people realize that war and extreme measures such as the nuclear bomb are not the solution.

The English language with its funny Irish accent, the contemporary drama and music (just think about U2), the golf, rugby and soccer are widely known and loved by people from all over the world.

The Liverpool experience
Travel to Liverpool, one of the largest cities in Great Britain, and come to esteem the cultural heritage and history of this impressive metropolis. It was elected Capital of Culture in 2008, and its representative mark is the famous Pier Head Waterfront, a building that was included on the UNESCO list since 2004.
Liverpool is a city for those who like culture, who want to recreate the atmosphere from the 1900s and want to make great memories in a city filled with history. The Royal Liver Building is a great place to start your adventure in Liverpool. It is a symbol of the city’s waterfront and with its unique structure and height still dominates the skyline. The Liver Birds sitting atop of the building are well-known and the river-facing clock completes the image.
If you are a Beatles fan, than the reason of your visit is the museum specially dedicated to them, The Beatles Story. It is the only museum in the world that has exhibits only related to the life of those from the Beatles, such as their instruments and other objects. Besides the museum, you can also visit their homes, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields, commemorative statues and more.
Albert Dock is another part of the city worth visiting. The old warehouses have been transformed and replaced by shops, restaurants, pubs, hotels, galleries and museums that still kept the interesting architecture. The area is situated in the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings in the entire United Kingdom.
Another building that was thoroughly restored for the Capital of Culture Year 2008 is St. George’s Hall. It is thought to be most representative for the Greco-Roman architectural style. On the exterior, the construction is adorned with classical murals of female nudity, considered quite shameful and shocking in their days. Liverpool mixes a variety of architectural styles. For example, Liverpool Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture, so imposing and grand that the man who built Lord Derby’s tomb declared that no self-respecting mouse will ever live there. Therefore, he designed a mouse on the tomb, just under Lord Derby’s pillow.
All in all, if you want to reconnect with a forgotten period, or you simply want to see the city where the greatest band of all times, The Beatles, has found its success, you have to travel to Liverpool, the capital of mixed architectural styles.

Chilly Finland
The Nordic country of Finland is best known for its low temperatures. Despite that, it is visited by many people every year: approximately four million people annually. Thus, tourism has increased the country’s economy greatly, reaching in 2010 €6.7 billion, with a 5% increase from the previous year. The landscape is what makes the people come here every year. The whole country is covered with rolling hills, pine forests, lakes and inlets. It is the house of 35 national parks, most of it being virgin and unspoiled. Despite that, it also has urbanized regions where tourists can be part of cultural events and interesting, traditional activities. Children are particularly excited to visit this country, as it is known as the home of Santa Claus who presumably lives in the northern region of Lapland. There, the Aurora Borealis is seen frequently in the winter as during the polar night the sun doesn’t rise for days, weeks and even months.
In what concerns the activities, one can do there from Nordic skiing, yachting, fishing and golf to hiking, kayaking and lake cruising. As wildlife is rich in this Nordic country, bird-watching and hunting is very popular between the locals. Other common activities are the elk, reindeer and hare games, but also the natural attraction of the sun which doesn’t set for 73 consecutive days in the summer. This is a phenomenon which you will never see anywhere else and only for it, it deserves to travel to Finland.
In Helsinki there are a lot of things highly recommended to be visited. First of all there’s the Finlandia Hall. This concert and convention hall with a façade of Carrara marble has an important historic value, as the Final Act of the Conference of Security was signed here. Near to it you may want to visit the park, home to huge chessboards and chessmen. Here is also the Finnish National Opera House, dating from 1993. If still not tired of visiting concert halls, also enter the underground church named Rock Church. This is also used as a concert hall, but it is very interesting in location and construction. Built from native granite, it has a circular shallow dome of copper sheeting and glass.
If you want to escape the crowded capital of Finland, try going to Heinola, a very popular holiday resort that offers a great number of summer activities. Being an industrial town also, and an educational centre, the city can accommodate you in one of its finest hotels. Wooden churches, belfries and many sigh seeing routes will surely make your vacation an unforgettable one.

Shopping in Brussels
When traveling abroad, one of the most interesting things to do is to go shopping. That is because in foreign countries you can find very interesting things that cannot be found in your own. Or at least that is the impression that you get once you arrive overseas. From their art objects, traditions and eating habits to their clothing stores, foreign countries offer you something different every time.
The first thing you should know when shopping in Brussels is that the hours during which you can do that are very limited. Most shops close at 18 o’clock, and even the supermarkets function just until 20 o’clock. Also, the stores are not open on Sundays or Saturdays, excepting the days before Christmas.
If you are looking for a place where you can find almost everything you may want at a rather small price, then you can take a walk to the Chaussée d’Ixelles. It begins at the Porte de Namur by offering everything from high street fashion and African clothes to Chinese pots and Tibetan hats. But in this district you can also find label products. If you have a lot of money to spend during a shopping session, than you should visit Avenue Louise along with its neighboring streets, like Toison d’Or. There you can find French and Italian brands, but also creations of Belgian designers. Women may also be tempted to go on Nieuwstraat Street if interested in a three floor lingerie shop where they are allowed to try anything on.
In order to buy some famous Belgian chocolate you should go to the Grand Place. There you can find the well-known Neuhaus chocolate which is not as expensive as you might think. In the same time, typical souvenirs can be found here. Except the Belgian chocolate, try the ‘speculoos’ brown sugar biscuits, some Belgian beer and the ‘Tintin Memorabilia’. For something different than clothing and food, in the Place du Jeu de Balle you can shop at the fee market, vintage boutiques, design galleries or discount stores.
On the Boulevard de Waterloo, the most stylish of the city, the expensive stores are to be found. From Gucci, Armani, Chanel, Dior and Vuitton to Hermès, Saint Laurent and Versace, that is the place to go when having a big budget. Do not miss an important shop in the country; the ‘Maison Delvaux’ shop creates and offers all kind of leather goods specifically for the Royal family, being one of the most reputed fashion houses there.
