Hiroshima- past and present
Hiroshima has been an international symbol since the bomb attack during the World War II. Along with another Japanese city, Nagasaki was attacked by the United States Air Army with a nuclear weapon which destroyed its entire surface, making it one with the ground. It was a disaster that has terrified the entire population of the globe and will remain in the universal history for ever.
What is more, the city was also depositing military supplies, guns and armaments for the war. Also it was a key point for shipping therefore its destruction was not exactly a coincidence, but more of a strategic move.
On the sixth of August 1945, the atomic bomb, named “Little Boy” was dropped over Hiroshima by the Americans and killed approximately 80,000 people. However, the radiations produced by the bomb have killed many other individuals by the end of the same year. The total number of victims was raised at about 140,000. Also, the buildings in the city have been destroyed in proportion of 70%, and the remaining ones were completely damaged. Where used to be an entire city, with people, homes, animals, the next day was nothing, only dust and sadness.
Nevertheless, a long time has passed since then and now it is only a desolate memory. The city has been transformed too. In 1958, the population of Hiroshima has grown enough to overcome the population killed by the atomic bomb and it has been flourishing since then. At present it is a glowing, urban center which hosts no less than 1,12 million residents. However, this doesn’t mean that they have forgotten about the disaster that killed their families, only they try to move forward, only cherishing the memory of their loved ones. There still are symbols and monuments dedicated to those who were killed in 1945. The A-bomb Dome, for example, is a witness of the tragedy. It is visited by thousands of tourists and all kind of people who desire to cherish the memory of those who died. In 1996 it was officially included on the World Heritage List. It will last in time to tell future generation the story of their ancestors, to learn them that nothing must be taken for granted and to teach them to cherish life.
In addition, the Peace Declaration is read annually by the mayor and Hiroshima is an international peace city. It will continue fighting against violence, nuclear weapons and war. It is said that you cannot know if you haven’t been there and this applies in this case better than in any other. Those who haven’t witnessed the tragedy, or who haven’t had their family killed in war, cannot know how much pain can such a catastrophe cause. They must learn from the others.
Anyhow, today, Hiroshima is a city entirely changed, ready to be visited and admired. Its aspect is completely different. It has new buildings, restaurants, shops and hotels, all showing a whole new place. A city where people have fun, go out with their friends, have fun and go on with their lives.

Coffee travels
After petroleum, coffee is the world’s second valuable commodity and for some, a daily necessity. It becomes addictive, as it comes in so many flavors and it can be sweetened with milk, sugar or whip cream. And even if it’s original from the passionate Brazil, coffee is now savored all over the world. In its country of origin, coffee is served hot, strong and sweet, but two times a day: in the morning, when it’s served with milk, and in the afternoon, when it’s in a smaller content, named cafezinho. Either way, it’s the best there is.
In Vienna, coffee houses are very famous and have become an attraction in themselves. Each coffee house serves different types of this drink, all of them having secret recipes and ingredients that they add in the coffee in order to make it more delicious. An abundance of coffee can also be found in Seattle, the city in which Starbucks originated. The famous brand isn't the only one that can be found here, though, because chains like Caffé Vita also serve this drink in a fabulous way.
In Costa Rica coffee is the most popular drink. They call it cafécito, and they offer it to you wherever you go. Because of its energetic qualities, the government of the country decided that all workers who’re building roads should receive a free cup of coffee daily. The same fuss about coffee can be found in Rome, the land of espresso, a quick, small but strong coffee. Caffè Sant’Eustachio is renowned in the city for the many types of coffee it offers, among which great caffè macchiato, caffè lungo, caffè corretto and cappuccino.
If you’re ever in Melbourne, you should try the great coffee it has to offer. Here, lingering over a coffee is a sacred habit, whether you do it alone or together with friends. Pellegrini’s the best place where you can do both of them. If in Medellin though, try Le Bon Café and also save time for visiting coffee plantations in Zona Cafetera in order for purchasing coffee directly from growers. The Turkish coffee in Istanbul, Türk kahve as they call it, is one of their traditional proud. Etham Tezçakar Kahveci coffee house serves one of the best and strongest coffees in the world. If you have heart problems, be sure not to drink it excessively. Nonetheless, try it if you have the chance.
In Havana, the Cuban coffee is served sweet, black and strong, as the locals like it. Don’t be fooled by the small espresso cups in which they drink it, as the coffee inside them is very strong. Coffee houses are very popular in Havana, so you have many places from which to choose, but the most interesting one is the Café de las Infusiones.

Wonders, wonders, wonders...
One of the largest statues in the ancient world and considered to be a wonder of it was the Colossus of Rhodes. It represented the Greek Titan Helios and it was built to commemorate the victory of Rhodes over the ruler of Cyprus. What links the seven wonders of the world together is the fact that their construction still remains a mystery even today. Possible construction methods have been discussed, but no one reached a conclusion. The Colossus of Rhodes had a base pedestal of 60 feet, bronze plates of 60 inches and a mound of 300 feet up to the top of the statue.
Another wonder of the world is the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the oldest and largest pyramids from the Giza Necropolis. It remained intact up till today and still raises questions about its use and construction methods. It was believed to have been built as a tomb for four dynasties of Egyptians during a 20 year old period. Built by using approximately 2.3 million huge stone blocks, the pyramid’s construction was completed in 2560 BC. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was, as the pyramid, a tomb for Mausolus, a satrap in the Persian Empire. Completed in 350 BC, it had 148 feet high and it was adorned with many sculptural reliefs. The former mausoleum now sits in ruins, but there are parts of it in the British Museum also.
Built in the city of Babylon for the wife’s king who longed for the plants and trees in her homeland, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon date from 500 BC. Several earthquakes destroyed them though after 2nd century BC. Even though the majority believes that they really existed, there are some who think that the Gardens were a mere invention, as no historical account about them has ever been found. Being for centuries the tallest construction made by man, the Lighthouse of Alexandria is another wonder of the world. Built on a small island near Alexandria, the lighthouse had the purpose to guide sailors at night. During the daytime, it had the role of a landmark. A complete description of it was given by an Arab traveler. He related that the lighthouse was 28 feet high.
Probably one of the best-known wonders of the world is the Statue of Zeus at Olympia. Constructed around 432 BC, the statue was 43 feet tall. It disappeared because of the Roman Emperor Caligula who ordered that all statues of the gods to be brought from Greece and had their heads removed. The Temple of Artemis dedicated to the goddess Artemis is the 7th wonder of the ancient world. Near Ephesus, it was rebuilt three times before being completely destroyed in 401. Rediscovered in 1869 , the great temple lies now in ruins.

The world's strangest buildings
When you hear about a weird building, the first thing that comes into mind is the architecture and the design that it could have. But there are also other things that can render it odd, like the materials used for the construction of it or its purpose. In order to create a building that breaks the pattern, architects have to have an unusual type of imagination, but also be able to use the new technology in what concerns the process of construction.
One of the world’s strangest buildings is situated in Poland, in a city called Sopot. Its form is based on the paintings of Per Dahlberg, representing the image that you see when looking in a mirror that deforms the reality. With its crooked shape, it hosts many shops, cafes, and bars on its three stories. But funny shapes of buildings may have other purposes also, than the sole one of entertaining the viewers. For example they can represent the product itself that the company in the building creates. In Newark, Ohio, the Longaberger Company makes baskets. The appearance of the building is a six level high basket.
Not always though, are strange buildings seen as something interesting. The Ramot Polin Apartments in Jerusalem, Israel were seen as an unorthodox complex of houses. It was penalized by the Israeli Ministry of Housing, especially for orthodox Jewish families. The building is in fact a multi-unit residential construction with a funny design, like a pentagon. The building looks like a complex of houses that fell one above the other, like after an earthquake.
Hamburg, Germany also hosts a very strange but interesting building. Built on the top of an old waterfront warehouse, the new building is made out of some glass in the form of thingamajig, that gives the impression that all of it is liquid and about to leak and flood the inhabitants. Last, but not least, the Atomium in Brussels is Belgium's one of the best known strange buildings in the world. Envisioned by an engineer, the building is the replica of a molecule, and was built in order to symbolize the ‘peaceful use of atomic energy for scientific purposes’. Even if it is made up of nine spheres, only five of them are accessible to the visitors, and walking through the tubes that connect the spheres is also possible.
Odd shaped buildings do not always serve a purpose. They are often built in order to entertain or amuse the viewers and especially the tourists.

Bizarre bars around the world
If you’re passionate about travelling and visiting the most bizarre places in the world, you shouldn’t limit yourself to just sights, museums and castles, but also try something more unconventional, like visiting bizarre bars around the world.
One of the most interesting, but in the same time bizarre bars in the world is the Red Sea Star in Eilat, Israel. What is most surprising about it is the fact that it’s 5 meters underwater. Below the Rea Sea, you can visit this amazing mermaid’s lounge which obviously has fish and water motives on display, among which starfish-shaped lights and jellyfish-shaped stools. Funnily enough, through the huge windows of the bar you can observe sea creatures staring at you while you enjoy your drink.
In the capital of Japan you can go to Albatross, a tiny bar wrapped inside another small one. The place is very tight and crowded, but it has three floors. As the waiters are upstairs, they pass your drinks through holes made in the floors and ceilings. Watch out at these holes, as people have fallen through them many times. Also located in Tokyo is the Vampire Café that has a gothic décor. This is among the most bizarre bars in the world, as it’s morbidly decorated. Even the food served there is brought to you in tiny little coffins. The drinks are of course, mostly red and the appetizers look just like tiny skulls. If you want to forget about the lively world, then this is the place to go.
Another odd bar is Nasa from Bangalore, India. This one has a space-shuttle-style décor and funny spacey tags, like ‘Humanoid Disposal’ for the toilets and ‘Fuel Tank’ for the bar. Its tables are attached to rocket fins and laser shows are presented there every night. Moreover, images of planet Earth seen from orbit are painted on the walls.
For a darker kind of bar, you should try the bizarre Depeche Mode Bar in Tallinn, Estonia. If you’re a Depeche Mode fan, this is the place to go, so you can listen to their cold melancholic music while sipping Master & Servant or Personal Jesus drinks. The décor of the bar consists of autographed photos, video screens that play the band’s songs and walls filled with artwork of the band’s members and the band’s memorabilia.
If you want to visit something even more out of the ordinary, then try going to the Hobbit House in Manila, Philippines. This bar isn’t renowned only for the live music it plays nightly, but also for the Tolkien-themed décor. The staff of the bar is composed of actual dwarves and midgets and the furnishing is rustic and charming. You may have to bend over if you want to serve something there, but it’s all worth it.

Nobody would ever refuse a great vacation on a deserted island, away from all the stress and all the city noise. The beaches and the sun, or even the mountains and the forests can make you feel relaxed and forget all your troubles. Even though many people believe that only being on an island can help relieve stress, it isn’t exactly right. Many islands are very crowded and many people get annoyed when they see the noisy beaches full of tourists. That is why it is ideal to find a secret island, only for you.
One of the best choices is Ulleungdo in South Korea. It’s the place to be for those who want to simply enjoy a quiet vacation on the seaside. It is a paradise on earth, without all those amusement parks and major resort sites. The best way of visiting the island and reconnect with nature is hiking. You will also have great landscapes to take exquisite photographs.
The Torres Strait Islands is another great deserted place. The 274 islands are in the same original state, as if the Europeans had never arrived. They preserve a unique tribal culture that will unveil a new world, creating a bridge between Aboriginal Australia and Papua New Guinea. There are great accommodations, but not as crowded as on popular islands, so you will be able to enjoy a peaceful, relaxing vacation.
If you want to taste a piece of Japanese traditional culture, you should go to Yaeyama Islands. Situated in the southern region of Japanese archipelago, they look more like the Caribbean rather than the usual Japanese islands. Iriomote, Taketomi and Ishigaki will certainly give you enough sun, sea, sand and sushi to remember it for the rest of your life. For a great tan and relaxation, Ishigaki Island is the one you are looking for, but if you want to learn more about the architecture and lifestyle of ancient Japanese, you should go to Taketomi. Either way, you will remain with beautiful memories.
San Blas Archipelago is located in Panama and it probably isn’t the first choice for tourists who only want to have some fun. These 365 tiny islands do not hold any modern accommodations, so forget about luxurious meals and fancy rooms and only think about reconnecting with nature and catching some dinner. It is a great place for relaxation and bathing in warm, shallow waters, without thinking of what can happen tomorrow.
These are only some of the best secret islands in the world, so in case you feel like you can’t handle the pressure at work or you simply want to experience new things, make sure you spend your vacations here at least once in your lifetime.

Winter car travel tips
Winter car traveling can be dangerous. Either you are alone or with your family and children, it is always good to be prepared for the unexpected. You can buy a car safety travel kit, or you can make one yourself. The kit’s content should contain a rechargeable cell phone, brushes and ice scrapers, candles, matches, blankets, a flashlight, car winter gel, plastic shovels and deicer. If you do not panic easily, than put there a good book also. After all, what’s a man to do when snowed in? But that is not the only thing you should have with you on the road. Before starting driving for a long way, be sure you have everything you need. First of all, take an interest in weather conditions and make sure of the route you want to follow. Check if it is safe to drive that way by verifying the road condition. If driving in a mountain area, the checking should be concerned with avalanches and icy driveways. Also remember to check your own car before driving away. It should be in a good condition and equipped with winter tires and snow chains. Second of all, take with you a lot of food and water. In the worst case scenario, if you remain snowed in or worse, it is good for you to be able to feed yourself. Drink plenty of water in order to hydrate, eat sweets and fruits for more nourishment and do not keep the products you take with you in your trunk because there they might freeze. Do not leave the vehicle if you have any problems, but just try to contact help immediately. Winter car travel driving is known to be more fatiguing, so make sure that you rest well before leaving, and that you also make sufficient stops during the way. You might get there later, but it is best to be safe than sorry. Only a couple of minutes of stretching and walking near the car can do wonders for your tired body and mind. Regularly clean your windshield so you can always have a clear view of the road ahead and drive safely. The road is tricky. It might seem that there is just snow on it, but it may be ice. Do not take risks when winter car traveling with your family. Have patience before getting at your final destination and remember that you are not alone on the driveway. Open your eyes widely and watch out for the other drivers. They might not be as careful as you are. |
Pet Traveling
If you are going on a vacation far away from home and you really want to share the joy, relaxation and fun with your animal, or maybe you just don’t have anyone to leave it with, it is important to know how to prepare it for the voyage. You have to make sure that the animal will not be uncomfortable while on vacation and that it will have enough space to exercise and run.
First of all, you have to consider the fact that not many hotels accept animals in their building, so book a room where you know that pets are allowed. You also should pay a visit to your veterinarian, to get an update status on you animal, to receive information regarding the things you should do before leaving and receive a health certificate. Have your pet groomed well before leaving and buy a collar with its name and address, in case it gets lost.
You cannot pet travel without having a crate or carrier. Even if you go by train or by car, not all people love animals and many of them have allergies. But don’t forget that your pet must also feel good therefore you should by a crate or a carrier that is spacious enough to allow it to stand up, turn around or lie down. Familiarizing your pet with the crate would be a good idea, since many of them can get pretty anxious. Also, make sure there is nothing that can hurt it and write your name and contact information in case of loss.
Your pet will also need some food and water, eating and drinking bowls, a litter box and plastic bags. Although it may seem useless since you are going on a vacation, bring with you some treats and toys to make it happy, who knows, maybe you’ll run on the beach together.
If you decide on traveling by plane, do not forget there are some rules and regulations that you must follow, and you also must pay extra. If your trip is by car, don’t let your pet stick its head out the windows and doors. Lastly, try to plan some activities that you think your pet might enjoy, respect leash and clean-up regulations and keep an eye on your pet at all times, because if you lose it, there is a great chance you may never find it.
Tips for kid traveling
Either you travel by car, plane or train, when traveling with children everything becomes trickier. Younger or older, they have typical requests according to their age. And if you want to have a problem-free trip, you should be prepared for anything they might ask you during the journey. First of all, if you are in your own car or on a plane, be sure that both you and your children wear the seatbelts. It represents the simplest way to stay safe. If they see you do it, it should be no problem doing it themselves. Always give them the right example.
When in a car, do not allow them to stay on the front seat, and if they are younger than four years old, make sure you seat them in a special federally-approved safety seat which has to be firmly strapped. Being stuck on a seat for a longer time might not be so well for them, so make frequent stops whenever you can. Let them run freely and play, but also provide them with food, water, games and toys. While in the car organize word and guessing games or a sing-along. Explain to them whatever questions they may have concerning what they see on the road, and try to keep them entertained as much as you can by pointing out to them what you consider interesting about the trip that you are taking. Make sure they know where you are taking them and also be sure that they like where you are going.
If you travel by plane make sure you book seats with extra leg room, explain your children that they have to yawn, swallow or chew gum during take offs and landings and go with them whenever they want to use the toilettes. Do not leave them out of your sight and sooth them if they have any concerns about the flight. After landing keep an eye on them on all times, because children are lost in airports very often.
In the unfortunate case of an accident happening, be sure you have with you a safety kit that contains meds, blankets, food and water and a rechargeable cell phone. It is important to keep your children safe at all times, hard, but not impossible. Make sure to remind them that they are protected everywhere they go, and do not leave them alone in order for them not to get scared or feel abandoned.
