Dec 1 - Abu Dhabi and a luxurious fashion week
World Luxury Fashion Week completed a four-day schedule on a high note with the acclaimed Amato, a Dubai-based designer whose collection arrived from Los Angeles just in time for World Luxury Fashion Week, that took place 25-28 November 2012 at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi. A dramatic finale show, ‘Confessions of Mata Hari’, stayed the course with Amato’s dazzlingly crafted designs, featuring silver and gold motifs, with models wearing jewel-encrusted masks spikes, studs, crystals and metallic fabrics glistened into his designs, along with sheer materials adding an ethereal quality.
The Amato show completed an already impressive list of fashion flair seen at World Luxury Fashion Week, which presented collections from haute couture houses, Jean Paul Gaultier, Giambattista Valli, Alexis Mabille and On Aura Tout Vu. Some of the most prestigious prêt-à-porter brands, featuring the likes of Carolina Herrera NY, DAS Collections, Ermanno Scervino, Herve Leger, Nina Ricci, Paul Ka “Black Carpet” Collection and Walid Atallah were equally well received by the audience during the four-day event.
All guests enjoyed a five-course dinner indulgence with a fashion show taking place during each dining course, experiencing the best of fashion and food in a luxurious setting. Guests were seated at banquet tables configured around a “U-shaped” catwalk that allowed front row VIP positioning for all guests in attendance. World Luxury Fashion Week was proudly supported by iconic partners Abu Dhabi Motors, BMW, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, Rowenta, Hästens International, Etihad Airways, Avenue at Etihad Towers (Abu Dhabi’s first luxury shopping destination) and Evian Natural Mineral Water.
World Luxury Fashion Week will return to Abu Dhabi in 2013.

Nov.27 - Gambling scams and the Caribbean
According to the Boston Globe, a referendum next month will decide if some forms of gambling will be legalised in the Bahamas. But, warns Caribbean Cruise Line, scams known as “web shops” are currently the only way for islanders to participate in this pastime. In a recent article, The Boston Globe reports on the Bahamian prime minister’s announcement regarding next month’s gambling referendum. The referendum will decide whether some forms of legalised gambling will be permitted for citizens of the Bahamas. The archipelago, located east of Florida, currently does not allow its citizens to gamble.
Bahamians are also barred from gambling in the casinos located on the islands’ tourist resorts. However, underground gambling operations known as “web shops” still exist, where islanders bet on numbers in televised U.S. lotteries. They have become increasingly popular. Says Robert Mitchell, president of Caribbean Cruise Line, “Scams abound in these settings, where there is no government regulation. Our passengers often enjoy gambling at tourist casinos, but we advise them not to seek out or participate in any ‘web shop’ activities.”
Prime Minister Perry Christie announced Thursday that the referendum will take place on December 3rd, 2012. If it passes, underground gambling houses will be legalised, regulated, and taxed. Robert Mitchell of Caribbean Cruise Line, says “Scams may die out when gambling is legalised. It seems as if many Bahamians want to be allowed to gamble legally, and if this is the case, the referendum will pass. This will make it safer for everyone to gamble.”
According to Christie, the measure would generate $20 million a year in taxes if it passes. If it is rejected, however, he has vowed to shut down illegal gambling.
The Bahamas are home to a powerful church lobby, which is opposed to legalising gambling for people who live on the archipelago.
